Sprites have been modified and raced since the very first production dates (one story relates a car showing up at a local track three days after the car's official introduction in the States). Early on the cars were campaigned by the BMC factory team, as well as privateers. Some of the Sprite's early successes include:
1958
International Alpine Rally 1st, 2nd and 3rd in under 1,000 cc GT class; 14th, 19th and 25th overall in General Classification
1959
International Monte-Carlo Rally 3rd under 1,000 cc GT class; 14th overall in General Classification
10th Sestriere Rally 5th 1,000 cc Class; 39th overall
Sebring 12 Hour Sports Car Race - Florida 1st, 2nd, 3rd Class 4 (750-1,000 cc) GT Cars; 31st, 36th and 38th overall
International Circuit of Ireland 1st & 2nd Class 4; GT & Cars under 1,300 cc; 13th and 15th overall; Special Touring Team prize
International Alpine Rally 2nd under 1,000 cc class; 2nd GT General Classification
International R.A.C. Rally of Great Britain 1st in Class 7; 2nd in General Classification
1960
The 24 Hours of LeMans 1st Class 6th 851 - 1,000 cc; 5th Index of Thermal Efficiency; 11th Index of Performance; 12th Sports Car Class; Race Average 85.6 mph
Internation Liege-Rome-Liege Rally 1st in 1,000 cc Class; 3rd General Classification
