Crank Pulley Removal - Help

Postby Pubcrawler » Fri Apr 08, 2016 6:07 am

Need to change the timing chain and now notice I can't get at the bolt on the crank pulley because of the crossmember
Is there anyway of undoing this without raising the engine and if this has to be done can I get enough lift without undoing the gearbox mounts :?:

Thanks :D

Yes it can be done. I only have experience with the "A" series engines(948, 1098, 1275). You will have to remove the radiator, then unbolt both front motor mounts. You can jack up the engine enough to get a socket on the big bolt(1 5/16 as I recall). You should have enough clearance to remove the front pulley/harmonic dampener. I had to do this on my Bugeye that had a 1275 in it. Because of some slight damage to the body/frame I had to install the dampener after the engine was bolted in and had to remove it before I could pull the engine. Good luck.

Jacked up the engine as far as poss so that bolt could be removed but still had to hammer the cross member a little just to clear the pulley
Make sure the gearbox earth strap doesn't disconnect when jacking up the engine
