Waahoo lucky me

Postby Alans 66 Sprite » Mon Dec 29, 2014 10:20 am

Boy did I get lucky, The 1100 engine was running pretty bad when I got the car , found the head was bad. Figured Uh Ho this is going to get pricy to fix. Did a little searching and found a British sports car salvage yard not to far from me that has a ton of nice stuff. I picked up a nice head that has been magnafluxed and cleaned for $150. Plus two lower A-frames for a few more bucks.
I have a feeling I will be back there before the car is back on the road.

OK ya got me. whats the diference. I did not look for any numbers on the casting. When I spoke with the fellow at the salvage yard I only told him it was a 1098 engine. He said ,," no problem". He also said a 1275 head would work but I did not want to put a head on it with a bigger bore and different configuration of ports.
When I am off line I will go look at the head and see if there are any numbers on it.
I guess I have to ask why you asked,,,got one in your back pocket you dont need ???

Regarding the two casting numbers, both are for 1098 cc engines.
The heads are almost identical, with the 12G295 version having slightly larger intake valves.

The 12G206 head was normally used on 1098 engines that had 1.75" diameter main crankshaft journals, and the 12G295 with later engines that had 2.00" main journals.

Early 1098s: engine # 10CG, 1.75" main journals, 12G206 head.
Late 1098s: engine # 10CC, 2.00" main journals, 12G295 head.

AH HA,, after seeing your post I looked into it and I did see the difference. I called the salvage yard guy to make sure the one he has it the 12G295. Thanks for the heads up.
I am slowly getting the car apart and seeing where over the years it has not been treated as nice as it could have been.
There are good points and bad ones. It has a brand new fuel pump and a spin on oil filter and it looks like a rebuilt engine and all new carpeting and a Weber 32/36 carb. So some one was doing some stuff but must have had weak wrists because nothing was even close to tight.
So far I have not found one nut or bolt tight except the head bolts. I am going to pull the engine and trans soon and got under it to undo the stuff that needs to come off. I was puzzeled when I saw two holes in the cross member under the rear mount. I thought at first the bolts were recessed inside the member but no,,they were missing along with one of the ones in the cab on the trans tunnel . so there was only ONE bolt holding it in..What really kills me is every place a bolt is missing there is DUCT TAPE over the bolt hole...really strange .

Huh...wonder if the previous owner was planning on working or in mid-disassembly of the car for some reason.

It's amazing what has happened to many of these cars over the past 50-60 years. Not much surprises me anymore...but that's really part of the fun! :)
