Oil Pressure

Postby 66sprite » Thu Sep 25, 2014 9:22 am

Hi everyone - I have a 66 Sprite had for at least 30 years, however, never paid all that much attention to oil pressure. I have been noticing that when cold 60+ after it get warm 38. My bugeye seems to always be over 50 is this normal for a stock 1098cc?
Thanks

I have had 948 and 1098 engines, and the oil pressure in the 1098s was lower than in the 948s.
With straight 40 weight oil, the 1098 (2.00" main bearing crank, #10CC) maximum pressure with warm oil would be 40 psi. The 948s, 80 psi at high rpms, with warm 20W-50 oil. Same mechanical oil pressure gauge.
Why ? I am not sure. There could be several factors.

All sorts of things can change the hot running oil pressure. The bearing clearances in the particular 948 that you tested may be a little closer than in the 1098.
Also, I think the feed to the rocker shaft is slightly different.
40 pounds when hot is a decent number.
