Sprite rebuilt on Navy Destroyer Tender

A passer-by told me this story. There was a Navy Destroyer Tender that needed sea time and so it was ordered to go from Norfolk, VA to Pearl. The destroyer tenders are floating machine shops. They loaded a beat up Sprite and repaired it on the voyage. Purportedly they had to forge a transmission housing and used some helecopter parts for the electrical. The Sprite was in good shape but periodically they would have trouble finding parts.
Anyone heard this story? I liked it.
