hardtop clamps

Postby sprite63 » Mon Jun 07, 2004 9:58 pm

Reproduction front clamps are available from :

https://secure.ahspares.co.uk/ and may be available from others.

The rear clamps do not appear to be available from anyone and seem to be missing from many of the MKI tops I've seen for sale

On that e-bay clamp. The same seller sold a set for $142!! in not much better condition.

In addition to AH Spares they are also available from Bolt-On Healeys (see other post). Don't know if he has the rear mounts but those could probably be "fabbed" up without much trouble. They do have a slight compound angle.

I never though the rear mounts were all that good of a design anyway...mine never really worked that well.

I'll bet someone could improve upon the design! (Any engineers out there looking for a challenge?)

Now the front mounts I like--clipping onto the windshield lip is a great idea (unless of course you have a 1958 :)

That hardtop latch went for $56.50

Seems expensive for a piece of hardware!

I know. I'm tempted to take off the one "good" latch I have to help pay for the new ones I need. If I'm lucky I might make enough off that one to pay for both new ones

I'll probably still restore my BE top (never know when one could show up in my garage :o ) but I'm still on the lookout for a MK II top.

What's the difference between a MKI and a MKII top?

Here's a picture of one on e-bay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7904110469

As well as the back window being flat (essentially) the bottom rear of the top is flatter to fit the different rear deck of the MK II. The front clamps are different but still attach the to the windshield frame the same way.

Interesting!

(That MKII Hard Top looks a bit tired...probably not worth the asking price?)

Considering what they go for and the fact that MK II tops are faily rare it's not too bad. The only reason I didn't bid on it was the shipping issue.
I've BE tops in a similar condition to my top (needing complete restoration and a window) sell for $100-$150.

Bill Bolton said he can get "new" (repro?) ones for about $675.
