How to tell + or - earth?

Postby PHerder » Mon Mar 10, 2008 9:07 am

My 66 Sprite sat in a grainary for ~ 20 years (PO) and the battery is long gone. Is there a simple way to tell if it is + or - earth? I.e. what would tell me if a PO has changed to - earth or left it stock?

When I put a Ohm meter to the coil, I get readings from the coil to the chassis but nothing to the battery wire that is NOT attached to the chassis.

Doh! I just thought that since the key switch is NOT on, I probably will NOT get any reading from the battery to the coil.

So, the question remains, what to look for?

TIA!

If both battery cables are there look at them. One cable end will have a bigger inside diameter than the other.
The positive (+) side is larger than the negative end terminal.
