wire wheel axle conversion 1/4 elipticle

as the wire wheel axle shaft is shorter,I have been told that one could pull/press the shaft out of the splined hub to make the whole thing longer. Apparently, there might be enough meat left in the splined hub to not conpromise the strength? The answer is ,of course, to get a true 1/4 wire wheel axle assembly which I understand is rather rare. If I found one,how would I identify it? Sliding the shorter shaft into the assembly will not allow full engagement into the diff. Is this really a problem with a 1275? Bob C

I have converted a couple of Sprites to wire wheels from solid wheels.
I know the axles are different but I never had a problem with the shorter wire axles in the disc wheel axle housing.
And I drive em hard
So if it's not on a race track, just use what you have.
And if it's on a race track, get rid of the wires 8)
