948 to 1275 rib case conversion parts list

Postby Frogbird » Sat Jun 28, 2014 5:02 pm

Can anyone provide me with the specific list of parts that must change to convert from a smooth case on a 948 to a rib case? Just want to make sure I do this right.

Thanks

Rear engine Plate
Flywheel
all clutch parts
ribcase throw-out arm
Check pilot bearing inner diameter-pilot bearing
You can use the old slave cylinder, or you can upgrade to the 1275 which is smaller in diameter
Try to find a front cover to the trans with a lip seal, its worth the $$$
That's it.

Thanks Highlander. I have most of these parts. Will get the rest.

I'm not sure what you mean by a front cover to the trans with a lip seal, is that the bell housing?

Front cover has the pivot ears for the clutch throw out arm and holds the end of the layshaft in place- Its inside of the bellhousing. The later boxes (I think) had a lip seal in the cover that allows it to not leak onto your clutch  . You can find them from MiniMania or MO$$ or on fleabay. its a really good upgrade for your ribcase.

The front cover with the lip seal is an aftermarket modified stock piece. The original stock part just has a scroll. Last time I bought one, Winner's Circle (Spridget.com) had a much better price than MiniMania.

I know I switched the original smooth case trans on my 948 Bugeye to a rib case in th elate 1960s so I don't recall all the parts that were changed but I cannot recall changing the engine back plate.
The pilot bearing is the same for all a series motors, I have used a smooth case input shaft for a clutch alignment tool since forever.
