How to tell smooth from ribcase gearbox 60 bugeye

Postby dva » Sun Apr 15, 2012 4:38 pm

Hi!

What’s the easiest way to tell what gearbox is installed on a 60 Bugeye? I don’t know what to look for (or where) to ID whether I have the “smooth” or the “ribcage” version. The motor appears to have been replaced as the serial number starts with 9CG, and I was told that the original motor would be marked 9C or 9CC. The motor/trans is installed and the car runs.

Thanks
Dave

A 948 engine with a 9CG code indicates that the block has three camshaft bearings, rather than just one (front). 1961-1962 MK-2 Sprite and MK-1 Midget.
A Bugeye MK-I Sprite came with a smooth case transmission.
A rib-case transmission, 1962-1974, has ribs on the outside of the case.
