what 'box is it?

Postby jeremybarnes » Mon Jan 16, 2012 12:26 am

I'm in the process of considering the purchase of a 1960 Bugeye, and it has some mods performed that the seller knows nothing about. I've posted an engine Q in the engine forum, but have a transmission question here.

The car appears to have a 5-speed box of some sort in it. I've looked on the Rivergate page, and they claim that there are no mods to the interior of the car with their kit. The shroud where the lgear lever comes up through into the car (the piece that's usually painted body color -- sorry, i'm sure it has a proper name...) has been trimmed on the left side (near the driver) to allow the lever to go far enough to the left.

Any idea what kit the car might have in it, based on this hopeless description? And, think there's any chance it could be retrofitted to a stock box if I chose to? These questions might be impossible to answer without seeing the car, but it was worth asking.

Many thanks for the advice,

Jeremy.

As posted in the engine section, went back to look at the car again. Looking at these images, can anyone confirm this is the Datsun 210 box? It's a 5-speed with a standard-H pattern, with fifth to the right and up, and reverse to the right and down.

And, looking at the bellhousing adaptor, is this the Rivergate kit?

Many thanks for the input,

Jeremy,
I can't see the numbers on the transmission, but it looks like my Datsun 5 speed transmission. From the cutout on the starter side I would say it's an older Rivergate conversion. If you can post a picture of the serial numbers on the flat of the transmission just in front of the heater shelf I could make a positive identification. That's a very nice set up with the 1275 and Datsun 5 speed.

That could be either the Rivergate or the Morrisservice adapter kit.
The transmission has the drain plug pointing to the rear (not straight down) so I would have said that it is either a 4-speed transmission or a "dogleg" 5-speed. If you say that it has the conventional pattern then I am at a loss.
