5 Speed Morris Box??

Postby Ragnars-Frogeye » Sun Oct 12, 2008 2:58 pm

Hallo all together,

looking for something different in my book Geoffrey Healey More Healeys I read something about a five speed gearbox. On page 90 Geoffrey wrote abaot a "suitable casting that would fit the Sprite engine were designed, with the fith gear outside the main housing. ... Teh result was one of the most foolproof and easy to change five-speed boxes I have ever tested-and every box that Morris Engines produced afterwards were identical."
So does anyone know something more about this box?

looking forward to an answer

I dont thick it ever got past the prototype stage. what a pity. To my knowledge Morris never produced a 5 speed.

Hallo Noel,

there never was a 5 speed box in street sprites, but for racing they used one. That must be the one Geoffrey mentioned in his book.
the 5th speed was in an extension that looked into the inside of the car. I had a photo of it but I don't know where. When I'll find this picture I'll try to get it into the forum.

Hello,

I would assume that the 5-speed prototype had been based on a MGB-gearbox...

Only my two cents from Austria

From reserch I have done they used a standard box with the extra gear add on an external housing. Would not have been based on MGB, as development was before the MGB was devoloped .Also MGB never had a 5speed.

Hallo Noel,

your research seems to be correct. The picture I mentioned I haven't found by the time, but I know there is one in my books. May be in the Spritely Years. This book is at a friend who reads it.

Let's see where we can find the Morris box.
