I am looking at a A-Series engine. The seller says its a 1275 and it does look like a 1275, no cover plates on the manifold side and it has the can style oil separator on the front. The puzzle is the number plate on the top of the block indicates its a 1098 (number starts 10) the ID plate on the side is missing.
Were 1098 engines produced with out the plates on the side? Are there any other differences visible?

The front oil separator could be placed on any of the early A-series blocks.

The 1098 cc engine had two basic codes, 10CC and 10CG, with different sized main crankshaft journals.

Cylinder heads on the 1275 engines were somewhat square and straight near the thermostat housing area, while 948 and 1098 heads were more rounded. However, cylinder heads can be bolted to almost any engine.

The absence of the side covers is a good metric for 1275 engines.
