Timing spek?

Postby pjwilletts » Thu Aug 14, 2014 1:21 am

I have a 1275 engine from a 73-74 midget....there seems to be some confusion as to the static timing....what is it..5 or 7???

what's the engine code? Somewhere I have a shop manual that details the static timing based on engine code...

so you have a 12V motor too, huh? So do I. Static time it at 0 deg. I'll try to find the book so I can properly cite the author and page and stuff this weekend. When I got my Mk I it wasn't running great and seemed to run hot. Using the more traditional -5 deg didn't make it any better, then I stumbled on the page in this one manual that listed the set ups for a variety of motor numbers. Timing at zero degrees calmed the engine down and seriously helped with curbing overheating. I've been doing that way for a few years now and don't have trouble.

OK. The information I have comes from the Clymer Publications "Sprite & Midget 1958 - 1979 Shop Manual" written by Alan Ahlstrand. On page 23 is a table of tune specs for 1958 - 1974 and for static timing it lists the following:

948 4 deg BTDC
1098 5 deg BTDC
1275 engine codes starting with 12CC or 12CE 7 deg BTDC
1275 engine codes starting with 12CD or 12CJ 4 deg BTDC
1275 engine codes starting with 12V 0 deg TDC
